The Design of Hidden Door Hinge

If you are designing a product with a brass hinge, then you most likely want to hide it. Although the brass hinges of many products are exposed outside, most products are attractive in appearance. As people imagine, hidden brass hinges in the product is much more complicated than common hinges. For hidden brass door hinge design, you had better to keep in mind the following important questions.

4 considerations in the design of hidden door hinges

Whether you want to make hidden refrigerators, cabinets or other products, you need to choose your design carefully.

1. Are you over-designing?

Many products use hidden hinges, but not all. Kitchen cabinets often have hidden hinges, but it is just used for the door. Grills usually have hidden hinge design elements, especially counter weights, which allow people to easily open the huge lid. Some refrigerators even use hidden hinges. Maybe some people will ask why use the hidden hinge on the refrigerator? Since some refrigerators have decorative panels which look like cabinets, and hidden hinges can help maintain a consistent appearance in the kitchen.

There are many reasons to use hidden hinges, some are as below reasons:

Aesthetics: Many products look better without a large number of counterweights or exposed brass hinges.

Save space: Compared with products with exposed hinges, no hinges can make the product fit in a more compact space and smaller packaging.

Avoid heat: Keeping the hinge away from extreme heat will extend its life. In grills, ovens, presses and other kitchen appliances, hinges are often moved to safer areas.

Avoid using critical components: You may need to keep the hinge away from critical components to avoid damaging them. The Rotisseries and lights on the grill, the control panel on the refrigerator, and the knob on the oven are examples of parts to avoid.

2. Your hidden hinge will be more expensive than standard brass hinges.

Hidden counterweight hinges are not the cheap brass hinges listed in hardware stores. They provide additional value, but you have to pay for it. This is because hinge suppliers must consider other manufacturing and engineering considerations.

Since hidden hinges are expensive and complex in design, make sure you need one for your application. Otherwise, your cost may increase unnecessarily.

3. Where do you want to open the door?

Do you want to open the door in the cabinet space?

Do you want the door to open outside the cabinet space?

What kind of opening angle do you want to achieve?

Do you need a self-closing mechanism?

From what angle do you want it to start?

The manufacturer should ask all the above questions when design. In most cases, you will buy a custom hidden brass hinge, so make it clear when discussing your goals with the brass hinge manufacturer.

4. What kind of doorway do you want?

Some doors only need to be moved a short distance from the cabinet, while others need to be moved a greater distance. You need to know how far it is away the door in order to determine the size of the hinge.
