2018 was the year of silver and chrome, whilst 2019 saw the beginnings of a march backward in time to golds and darker materials. 2020 promises an even greater contrast in terms of architectural trends, finishes and styles.
The world is a much smaller place today. Whereas twenty years ago, leading designs in Europe translated to other western shores around every ten years. When Europe would be feasting on futuristic modernity in the year 1976, Australia would be reveling in antiquity. Look ahead ten years to 1986 and Australia was beginning to see signs of the modern look while Europe had long since moved on to more exotic themes and styles.
However, the internet has changed that forever and now the world’s eyes of design hover over a plethora of options.
From hardware to appliances black and brass were everywhere. Brass was mostly phased out through the ’90s but now is back to the mainstream of hardware. We saw polished brass cabinet pulls become the top-selling cabinet hardware finish of 2019 and it looks like it could outdo itself in 2020. It comes as a shock to some (or a scare), but today’s satin brass is more understated and subtle than it was in the ’80s and ’90s. These days hardware manufacturers have honed in on a new brass finish with more of a brushed, matte look rather than a polished, glossy one. Black is hanging right there with brass in popularity (and they pair great together, I might add). Black finishes have seen a steady increase in the last three years and it’s popularity continues to grow. Black’s great because just like in fashion, it goes with anything. Along with soft-close, push-to-open hardware seemed to be having a moment at KBIS. Push-to-open has been around for at least 20 years but hasn’t has made a big splash in the cabinet industry yet. This year it seemed to be attempting another push towards popularity.
Push-to-open allows you to go handleless which is great for obtaining a minimalist, modern design. Many new products were introduced with push-to-open drawer slides and push-to-open hinges. Same as soft-close, it never failed to get a reaction.
Floating shelves have been popular for a few years but the style is changing. The cubed look adds depth and creates an illusion of more open space while also providing convenient functional storage. The simplistic, modern design is ideal for kitchen cabinetry, home or office workspaces as well as commercial spaces like high-end retail stores, hotels, bars or restaurants.
